First Day at Heartwood: September 20, 1995. Got sent out on the wood truck with Tom Wilke. Tom is a mountain of a man. I was 18, and weighed about 175 lbs. I had never been what you call "fit", so I couldn't believe the sizes of the logs that Tom was hurling into the back of the wood truck. I tried my hardest and could only lift the smallest logs. I was completely sure that this was not what I wanted to do with my life.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA. Also lived in Burbank, CA, Watkins Glen, NY, and St. Louis, MO.
Education: Took a class at high school called "Field Natural History". I learned how to identify about 50 tree species. After working at Heartwood for 3 years, I went to Paul Smiths College of the Adirondacks and earned an associates degree in Urban Tree Management in 1999. Became a Certified Arborist in 2000. Attended and completed the ASCA Consulting Academy 2005. Enrolled in Bee School in 2008, but dropped out after only 3 classes. I plan on taking the course again, with the hopes of eventually making my own honey to put on English muffins.
Professional Affiliations: International Society of Arboriculture member, Southern Chapter of the ISA member, NC Urban Forestry Council member, Charlotte Arborists Association (current President), North Carolina Green Industry Council.
Hobbies: Climbing Trees. Playing poker even though I hardly know her. Cooking delicious food. Reading the dictionary and outdated history books. Hiking in the woods. Catching and releasing, unless it's big enough and tasty enough to eat. Posting on Treebuzz.com. Trying out new rope climbing techniques.
Favorite Movies: Repo Man. Stop or My Mom Will Shoot. Leningrad Cowboys go America. Buckaroo Bonzai and the fifth dimension. Ghostbusters. Stripes. Raising Arizona. The Big Lebowski. Superbad.
Favorite Ploy: Asking Simon's wife to make me some Stove Top stuffing for dinner while my girl at home is making me Stove Top stuffing for dinner totally unaware that I will have eaten one portion of stuffing prior to her batch. That's two Stove Top stuffing dinners in one night! Boo-Ya!
Turn-ons: Text messages from my girlfriend. Breath-taking views that require little physical exertion to enjoy (like my screensaver). Fresh Air (for some reason Terry Gross' voice just gets me going). Taqueria Mexicana on South Blvd.
Turn-offs: Bulldozers. Cilantro breath. Acer rubrum 'October Glory'
